Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people seek therapy. Whether it shows up as constant worry, panic attacks, or physical tension, therapy for anxiety provides a safe space to understand your experience and develop tools to manage it.

For some, anxiety feels like a constant companion. For others, it surfaces in specific situations, overwhelming their sense of peace, connection, or safety. Wherever you find yourself, you are not alone — and support is possible.

Types of Anxiety

This is not an exhaustive list of ways that anxiety can manifest itself; however, we typically see four main types of anxiety at The Mindful Place:

Generalized anxiety involves persistent, excessive worry about everyday situations — family, work, health, finances, and more. It’s not just in the mind; generalized anxiety often shows up physically as:

  • Restlessness or feeling “on edge”
  • Fatigue and difficulty concentrating
  • Muscle tension and irritability
  • Sleep difficulties or frequent disturbances

Many clients describe living in a near-constant state of alertness, where relaxation feels impossible and joy feels fleeting.

Therapy focuses on helping individuals manage and reduce symptoms, find peace in their bodies, and build greater capacity for presence, joy, and ease.

Relationship anxiety is marked by overwhelming fears about acceptance, love, and stability within a partnership. It often includes:

  • Overanalyzing partner behaviours
  • Seeking excessive reassurance
  • Fear of abandonment, betrayal, or not being “enough”

Past experiences of rejection or relational trauma can fuel these fears.

Therapy helps individuals identify the roots of their anxiety, build trust (both in themselves and their partners), and cultivate secure, fulfilling relationships.

Health anxiety involves excessive worry about personal health, often misinterpreting normal bodily sensations as signs of serious illness. Common experiences include:

  • Constant body-checking or monitoring
  • Frequent doctor visits and health research
  • Difficulty tolerating uncertainty about health

Therapy focuses on breaking the cycle of fear and reassurance-seeking, supporting individuals in building trust in their bodies, practicing mindfulness, and learning to navigate uncertainty with greater resilience.

Social anxiety is the intense fear of being judged, embarrassed, or rejected in social settings. Clients may experience:

  • Overthinking conversations or actions
  • Avoiding social events and gatherings
  • Isolation and disconnection from friends, colleagues, and opportunities

In therapy, we work to build self-confidence, challenge negative thought patterns, and gently expand comfort in social spaces — helping individuals feel more connected and authentic in relationships and community.

When anxiety takes over, therapy can help you find calm and clarity.

Let’s work together to understand your anxiety and ease its grip.
